August has been in the industry since 2007, albeit in an indirect route to full time HVAC/R field work. Starting off as a Director of Maintenance for a large Hospitality organization, various tasks included diagnostics, repair and replacement of HVAC/R equipment at various properties throughout the west suburbs of Chicago. After moving to Colorado in 2009, he studied HVAC/R and Natural Resources at Front Range Community College, keeping a 3.9 GPA while working full time and attending night classes. Formal HVAC specific field work started in 2014 for a large family owned HVAC contractor located in Berthoud.
In the last 12 years of full time field work, August has been in thousands upon thousands of homes and businesses along the Front Range, performing diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and replacements of residential and commercial HVAC equipment. A partial shift into commercial refrigeration starting in 2018 allowed him to further utilize his skill set with refrigeration theory and diagnostics, prioritizing problem solving and emergency response (walk in coolers and freezers with thousands of dollars of product can’t be down for long!) and continuing to provide exemplary customer service for restaurants, breweries and other establishments with the need for medium and low temp refrigeration.
clients across the Front Range while offering repair and replacement services for far less than many of the other big companies in the area. A shift in the industry was noted prior to 2020, where many small, family run “mom and pop” shops were bought out by Private Equity (PE) investors.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE INDUSTRY TODAY
With little to no regard to the individual clients personal needs or wants and emphasis on selling equipment instead of replacing equipment, customer satisfaction has waned considerably, especially with a shift in pay structure for technicians. These Profit over People companies now have “Selling Techs” instead of “Service Techs”, with the former being on Commission only pay structures or what the PE companies call “Performance Pay”. This is a terrible transition, and has resulted in the industry adopting a stigma for scare tactics, hard push sales techniques and just plain old dishonesty.
August still believes in the old way of doing things, with repairs preferred over new equipment installs. Keeping the family run, family operated business model alive and focusing on what he believes to be the most important aspect of the industry: client relationships and value of the repair.
